Fore: How did your club start?

Two years ago, I started a Facebook group The goal was to keep golf in SoCal thriving: help golfers of all skill levels meet one another, discuss course conditions/current deals and anything else SoCal Golf. The group quickly grew to thousands of members who wanted to meet each other, and the SCGC Players Club was born.

What is the mission of your club?

The premise for the club is like that of the Facebook group, but on a more intimate level. We have anywhere from 40-100 golfers come out to our monthly events and create lifelong relationships and play some golf while they’re at it.

What makes your club unique/special/different?

A big difference in the way our club operates is that we always allow guests at our events. We have competition between our members at every event, but we never want to leave out golfers who are looking to meet new friends and play some awesome courses.

What can your members expect when they join your club?

Members of our club have a guaranteed weekend tee time at least once a month, on great courses and at very reasonable rates. This is a passion project for me, not a source of income, so we are able to keep the golf rates as low as possible.

On a scale of super casual to Sunday at The Masters, how competitive does your club get?

SCGC Players Club is fairly casual, I’d say. We do have competition among members at each event and winners of each “season.” We have some great golfers and some beginners, no one is expecting to go pro, and we set up the events to have fun.

What types of events does your club offer?

We hold monthly events at various courses in SoCal, mostly in Ventura County. This guarantees our members have at least one weekend tee time per month at a great course. We do skins (optional) for both members and guests (with GHIN numbers).

What are some short-term initiatives and/or long-term initiatives you’d like to accomplish?

Short term, I’d like to continue growing the club and have more than one event per month for our members. I’m also working with a lot of golf brands and manufacturers to enhance the perks for our members with giveaways, event prizes, discounts, etc.

Long term, something important to me is keeping the game alive and getting kids playing. And not just kids whose parents play the game and have the means of getting started, but every kid with the desire to swing a golf club. I want to partner with a junior golf program and help in any way possible.
