The first thing you notice about Wilson Golf’s new Staff C300 set of clubs is the deep red driver, fairway wood and hybrid clubheads. While it’s not my favorite color, I think it makes these clubs look elegant. What Wilson wants you to notice more are the “Power Holes” — which are urethane-filled slots above and below the clubface in all of those woods plus in a double row on the iron soles. Their purpose is to let the face flex in more at impact and then rebound quickly, so that shots rocket off the face at a higher velocity for more distance. I’ve tested the clubs out several times at the range, comparing them side-by-side with other popular new models on the market. The driver looks inviting at address, performs adequately, but frankly feels a little tinny. The irons, which by the way are forged, are a pleasant surprise. They look great at rest behind the ball. Distance is comparable to anything out there, but to me they feel nicer and are more solid at impact than some of the other latest models. Accuracy is pretty spot on, as well. I would definitely suggest to consider them, if you’re in the market for new sticks.
